Healing is never linear and I’m always in favour of other therapies and modalities to support wellbeing. So whilst I love the healing power of human touch with reflexology I also know that there is power in sound. During my reiki training I listened to shamanic drumming which I found to be very restorative and I keep it now as one of my little rituals for meditation. Fascinated by its effects I’ve researched it and am pleased to share what I’ve discovered. Hopefully sufficient to inspire you to try listening to some yourself and see what it does for you.
Shamanic drumming has a long history in various cultures and is often considered healing or therapeutic. The deep, repetitive rhythmic beats can have several effects on the mind and body. Here’s what listening to shamanic drumming might do. It will be different for everyone and it might take a while to get into it, so dive in and see.
Mind calming
According to research, the steady, rhythmic beats can help synchronize brainwaves, guiding them from an active beta state to a more relaxed alpha or theta state. That’s certainly been my experience of it. Sceptics might think that just sounds boring, but this shift can reduce stress, promote relaxation, and lead to a meditative state, similar to what people experience during deep meditation. Easier than staring at your belly button for an hour don’t you think?
Stress reduction
The repetitive rhythm can stimulate a parasympathetic nervous response, which helps slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure, and reduce the level of cortisol, a stress hormone. This contributes to a sense of calm and relaxation. Much the same as experienced during a reflexology session.
Trance state
Many people find that repetitive drumming can induce a trance-like state, allowing them to feel a deep connection with themselves or their surroundings. This is a state where people might have visualizations or feel a sense of healing.
Promotes Physical Relaxation
The low, resonant tones of shamanic drums can produce vibrations that feel grounding. These vibrations may help relax muscles and release physical tension, providing a feeling of balance and grounding.
Enhances Emotional Release
Drumming can stimulate areas of the brain linked with emotions, making it easier for some people to process and release stored emotions. This can feel very healing on an emotional level, giving listeners a sense of release. I feel it in my heart when I listen. Give it a whirl and I’d love to know what it does for you if you’re happy to share.
Research n sound therapy and rhythmic drumming suggests that these effects aren't merely anecdotal. Many therapists and wellness practitioners use drumming for these benefits, though individual experiences may vary. I find it quite calming. The rhythmic drumming is much like a heartbeat and if you do an earth pulsing visualisation alongside it, well…… who’s to say what that might do for you. If you want to know the tracks I’ve found just pop me a message and I’ll happily share. Happy listening.
